Behind the Scenes peek for my readers...

9/20/2020

I just wrapped up final art for an upcoming picture book that I am beyond excited about and thought a little behind the scenes was in order. Thankful, written by Elaine Vickers, comes out in Fall of 2021 and I am already counting the days until our book’s debut. Elaine’s text is poetic and magical...with a rhythm and atmosphere that was a DREAM to bring to life in 3d.

One of my favorite things to build for the sets within the book was this miniature car. A cereal box, crafts paints, crayons, hot glue and battery-powered paper lantern lights were all brought together to create this little number. I wish I could just shrink to 3” tall to ride it!

The battery-powered paper lantern lights are tucked in snug and tight through two holes that had been cut into the cardboard. (For all my readers who may want to make a car of their own, I think miniature holiday lights could work just as well! )

And here’s the aftermath from a morning of building miniatures. When the creative bug hits me, I just go go go. Nothing beats that flurry of activity when one idea inspires another, which inspires another....it’s just the clean-up after that’s not as much fun ;).

What have you been building lately?
